Bird Counts

Page history last edited by Chris Dunn 2 years, 8 months ago

WHN sponsors two bird counts in our area each year. One is during the Christmas season and is part of the Christmas Bird Count organized by Cornell University and Bird Studies Canada. During this event we count all birds seen within a 24 hour period and in a 24km circle centred in Wildfield (Mayfield Road and Gore Road). Our count is divided up into the following areas:

Area 1 - Kleinburg Area

Area 2 - Woodbridge Area

Area 3 - Claireville

Area 4 - Heart Lake / Brampton

Area 5 - Snelgrove to Caledon East

Area 6 - Humber River

Area 7 - Bolton

The second count occurs in the second week of June but instead of counting individual birds we count species seen. It is called the Gerry Bennett Mid-summer Bird Count and is named after one of the club's founding members and a well-known Canadian birder.
